Vietjet on May 8 announced a new direct route between Ho Chi Minh City and Colombo at the Vietnam–Sri Lanka Trade, Investment and Tourism Cooperation Forum. The service will become the first direct air link between Vietnam and Sri Lanka, opening a fresh connection between Southeast Asia and South Asia.

The airline plans to begin operating the route in August 2026 with four round trips per week. Once launched, the service is expected to shorten travel time between the two cities and provide another practical option for passengers moving between Vietnam, Sri Lanka and the wider region.

Vietjet says travelers from Colombo will gain easier access to its broader network across Australia, Japan, South Korea, China, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand and other destinations. For Vietnamese travelers, the route adds a more convenient gateway to Sri Lanka, a destination attracting growing attention for its coastline, heritage sites and distinctive leisure appeal.

From an industry perspective, the new route matters for more than passenger traffic alone. It is positioned to support trade, investment, tourism and people-to-people exchange, while reinforcing the role of Vietnamese carriers in expanding regional connectivity beyond their traditional core markets.
