Vietnam Airlines Opens Ho Chi Minh City–Colombo Nonstop, Expanding South Asia Links

Vietnam Airlines has officially launched nonstop service between Ho Chi Minh City and Colombo, becoming the first Vietnamese carrier to operate a direct scheduled link to Sri Lanka. The inaugural service took place on August 16, adding a South Asian destination to the airline’s expanding international network for 2026.

The route operates three times a week. Flights from Ho Chi Minh City depart on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays, while return services from Colombo operate on Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays. The nonstop journey takes roughly four and a half hours, significantly reducing travel time compared with itineraries that require a connection through another regional hub.

Demand between the two countries has been rising quickly. Published market figures show that Vietnam–Sri Lanka passenger traffic exceeded 38,000 in 2025, up 17.5% from the previous year, while traffic in the first quarter of 2026 jumped by more than 136% year on year.

The direct service gives both leisure and business travelers another practical option. From Ho Chi Minh City, passengers can reach Colombo and continue to Sri Lanka’s cultural heritage sites, tea-growing highlands and coastal destinations without the extra complexity of a regional connection.

In the opposite direction, the new link improves access to Vietnam for Sri Lankan travelers and provides onward connections through Ho Chi Minh City to domestic and international destinations across Vietnam Airlines’ network. The route may also support stronger tourism, trade, investment and people-to-people links between Vietnam and South Asia.

Colombo is part of a broader international expansion by Vietnam Airlines in 2026. The carrier has been adding routes and frequencies across Europe, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Australia and Southeast Asia as international travel demand continues to strengthen.

For air travelers, a new nonstop service generally means more flexibility in departure times, baggage choices and overall itinerary planning. Passengers considering Sri Lanka should still check operating days, fare conditions and current entry requirements before booking, especially for peak travel periods later in the year.
