Vietnam Airlines Opens Ho Chi Minh City–Colombo Nonstop Service, Expanding South Asia Links
Vietnam Airlines began operating nonstop flights between Ho Chi Minh City and Colombo on August 16, 2026, marking the carrier’s first route to Sri Lanka. The service adds a new direct option between Vietnam and South Asia at a time when travel, commercial and tourism links between the two markets are expanding.
The launch is notable because Vietnam Airlines brought the service forward from its original timetable less than two months after announcing the route. The airline said stronger-than-expected market signals and rapidly growing demand between Vietnam and Sri Lanka supported the decision to start flights on August 16.
The route is operated with Airbus A321 aircraft three times a week. Flights from Ho Chi Minh City depart on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays, while services from Colombo operate on Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays. The staggered schedule gives passengers several options for building short or extended stays around the direct service.
For travellers, the biggest advantage is avoiding an intermediate connection through another hub. A nonstop flight can simplify the journey and reduce total travel time, while Colombo serves as a practical gateway to Sri Lanka’s coastal destinations, historic sites and central highlands known for tea country and scenic rail journeys.
The route also has relevance beyond leisure travel. Direct air access can support business trips, trade, investment and broader people-to-people links between the two countries. It also reflects a wider shift as Vietnamese airlines expand deeper into South Asia rather than concentrating only on established Northeast and Southeast Asian markets.
Some launch-related benefits remain available. Vietnam Airlines’ official website states that Lotusmiles members can earn double bonus miles and qualifying miles on the Ho Chi Minh City–Colombo route for tickets issued and travel completed through October 31, 2026. An additional complimentary baggage piece is also offered for eligible tickets issued through September 15 and travel through October 31, excluding Economy Super Lite fares.
Actual ticket prices can change according to travel date, booking class and remaining inventory. Passengers should therefore check the airline’s website, mobile app or authorised sales channels before confirming a trip, especially during the first weeks of a new route when demand can shift quickly across individual departure dates.
The Ho Chi Minh City–Colombo launch is another step in Vietnam Airlines’ international network expansion in 2026. For passengers in Vietnam and across Asia, the new service creates a more direct corridor to Sri Lanka and strengthens air links between Southeast Asia and the South Asian market.
