Hue–Phong Nha Heritage Train: A 190km Journey Across Central Vietnam’s Living Heritage
One train, five key stations and more than four hours of travel through imperial culture, wartime memory, a coastal city and the gateway to Phong Nha–Ke Bang
“Journey of Wonders – World Heritage” is more than a rail transfer from Hue toward Phong Nha. It has been developed as a tourism-focused train experience in which each station introduces a different layer of Central Vietnam. Over roughly 190 kilometres, passengers leave Hue’s cultural heritage landscape, pass through places shaped by modern history, reach the coastal rhythm of Dong Hoi and finish at Tho Loc Station — a gateway for onward travel to Phong Nha–Ke Bang National Park.
According to information published by Vietnam’s railway authorities, the service officially launches on 28 August 2026. In the Hue–Tho Loc direction, train HQ2 departs Hue at 07:15 and arrives at Tho Loc at 11:55. In the opposite direction, HQ1 leaves Tho Loc at 13:15 and reaches Hue at 17:25. The five principal stations are Hue, Dong Ha, My Trach, Dong Hoi and Tho Loc.

1. Hue Station – beginning in Vietnam’s imperial capital
Hue gives the journey its most atmospheric opening. Before boarding, travellers can explore the Complex of Hue Monuments, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, walk along the Perfume River, visit the Imperial City and Thien Mu Pagoda, or sample the refined flavours of the former royal capital. Once the train leaves Hue, the urban landscape gradually gives way to plains, villages and historically significant terrain farther north.
The Imperial City of Hue remains one of the most recognisable symbols of the cultural heritage landscape at the start of the route.
2. Dong Ha Station – where memory meets peace
Dong Ha is positioned as the route’s “destination of peace”. From here, travellers can connect to major historical sites including Quang Tri Ancient Citadel, the Ben Hai River–Hien Luong Bridge area and memorial spaces across the region. This leg is compelling not because it is loud or spectacular, but because it invites visitors to move through a landscape marked by conflict and to encounter it today through the lens of remembrance and peace.
Hien Luong Bridge and the Ben Hai River form one of the most significant historical landmarks accessible from the Dong Ha area.
3. My Trach Station – a journey into memory
My Trach is presented around the theme of “memory and notable figures”. Railway information also identifies the area as a convenient connection for travellers continuing to the Vinh Moc Tunnels, one of Quang Tri’s most remarkable historical sites. The stop adds depth to the route, transforming a scenic rail journey into an opportunity to engage with stories of people, resilience and Central Vietnam’s modern history.
The tunnel landscape and historical sites give the My Trach–Quang Tri leg a distinctive sense of place.
4. Dong Hoi Station – opening onto the coast
After the route’s history-rich sections, Dong Hoi changes the pace. The station is positioned as a gateway to coastal tourism, making it easy to extend the trip to Nhat Le Beach, enjoy fresh seafood or add a relaxing seaside stay before or after the train journey. The transition from imperial heritage and historical memory to the open coast gives the route the feel of a compact journey through the many faces of Central Vietnam.
Nhat Le Beach brings a bright coastal rhythm to the journey before the final leg toward the Phong Nha region.
5. Tho Loc Station – the rail gateway to Phong Nha–Ke Bang
Tho Loc is the final railway stop and is designated as the gateway for onward connections to the World Heritage landscape of Phong Nha–Ke Bang. From here, travellers can continue toward Phong Nha to experience limestone karst scenery, underground rivers and celebrated cave systems. It is a fitting finale: a route that begins in a World Cultural Heritage setting and ends at the doorstep of a World Natural Heritage landscape.
Phong Nha–Ke Bang is the natural continuation of the trip after the train reaches Tho Loc Station.
On board: a train designed around the travel experience
Under the published configuration, the train is planned with eight carriages and a total capacity of 304 passengers: five soft-seat coaches with 360-degree rotating seats, 56 seats per coach; one 24-seat VIP coach; one community coach; and one service and entertainment coach. The layout makes the intention clear — this is designed not only to move passengers, but also to create space for sightseeing, social interaction and cultural experiences on the move.
Stations along the route are also planned to feature photo spots and displays of local OCOP products and regional specialities. Together, these elements can turn the Hue–Phong Nha corridor into a connected travel experience: scenery from the window, local stories at the stations, and onward exploration through food, culture, history and nature.
Launch promotions worth noting
During the launch week from 29 August to 5 September 2026, the railway announced a 50% discount across fare classes, with full-route Hue–Tho Loc promotional fares ranging from VND 210,000 to VND 380,000 depending on class.
From 6 September to 31 December 2026, a 15% discount is scheduled to apply. Passengers purchasing round-trip tickets after the launch week are also due to receive an additional 10% discount on the return fare. Fares and conditions may change depending on the sales period, so travellers should confirm the latest price when booking.
